Il Master Boot Record (MBR), in italiano settore di avvio, è costituito dai primi 512 byte (mezzo Kbyte) dell'hard disk. È all'interno di questo fondamentale settore del disco che vengono conservati tutti i comandi e le informazioni necessarie al PC per poter avviare il sistema operativo.

Cairo-Dock is very easy to install and it has sophisticated graphic effects and it runs without installing compiz. The new Cairo-Dock version (1.5.5.4) has been released few weeks ago and it seems to have more features of the original MAC OS X dock. Personally I recommend the installation of Cairo-Dock to all that people who want to integrate a MAC OS X stylish dock in Linux without spending much time; in fact the .deb package allow you to install it in few minutes. This tutorial shows how you can set up a Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e. that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge. Kubuntu 8.04 is derived from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and uses the KDE desktop instead of the GNOME desktop.

Se già duemila anni fa Seneca sosteneva che "le idee migliori sono proprietà di tutti", il software libero, oggi, sta applicando questa formula. OpenMind con le edizioni precedenti è riuscito a diventare un luogo comune a tutte le persone che credono in queste idee e vogliono condividere le proprie esperienze e il proprio percorso con gli altri, diventando tra l'altro una manifestazione d'interesse nazionale sui temi legati all'open source e alle libertà digitali.

TiMidity++ is an open source MIDI to WAVE converter and player. It uses Gravis Ultrasound-compatible patch files and/or SoundFont Banks to generate digital audio data from general MIDI files. The audio data can be played through any sound device or stored on disk.On a fast machine, music can be played in real time. TiMidity++ is written in C and runs under Linux, FreeBSD, HP-UX, SunOS, MacOSX, and Win32, and porting to other systems with gcc should be easy.The original version of this program was written by Tuukka Toivonen <tt@cgs.fi> (he discontinued development because he was too busy with work). Since then, Masanao Izumo and others have begun to improve it, and now TiMidity++ has officially been released.

Chi ci avrebbe creduto nel 2004 che KDE e GNOME, le due interfacce desktop principali per Linux, organizzano insieme le loro riunioni annuali ? Sarebbe stato più facile  credere in gatti e  cani che firmano un trattato permanente di pace.....
