I Nine Inch Nails sono da anni tra i gruppi più attivi e innovativi nell'usare internet per promuovere il proprio lavoro: regalano le proprie canzoni ai fan perché le possano remixare (e non come mp3, ma prioprio come singole tracce da usare in programmi di editing sonoro), hanno usato sistemi di filesharing per diffondere musica promozionale, e hanno fatto una imponente e innovativa campagna di marketing virale per il loro ultimo disco con la major Universal, “Year zero”. Non stupisce che, svincolatisi dal contratto, abbiano deciso di seguire la strada dei Radiohead: un nuovo disco, venduto/regalato direttamente dal proprio sito.

 BurnCDDA è un frontend per le console cdrdao, cdrecord, mpg123, oggdec, mppdec, flac,  e mp3_check. Può essere utilizzato per creare CD audio da una playlist M3U (il formato dei brani amaroK e XMMS). Sostiene le disposizioni di MP3, OGG Vorbis, Musepack, FLAC, WAV, e potrebbe essere il modo più semplice per copiare un CD audio.

  FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) è un diffuso codec audio libero di tipo lossless, cioè senza perdita di qualità. A differenza delle codifiche lossy, infatti, come l'ogg vorbis, l'MP3 o l'AAC, la compressione non rimuove informazioni dal flusso audio, ed è quindi adatto sia all'ascolto normale che per l'archiviazione. Il formato FLAC attualmente ha un buon supporto da parte di vari software audio.FLAC diversamente dalla maggior parte degli algoritmi di compressione lossless (come ZIP e gzip, per esempio), raggiunge compressioni importanti, dell'ordine del 30-50%. Gli algoritmi lossless tradizionali raggiungono soltanto un 10-20%.

It is true! MP3 format is the most common format we normally use in our everyday applications but MP3 is a lossy compression algorithm and it is not comparable with the quality of uncompressed audio formats as Monkey’s Audio, ALAC, WMA. Nowadays, FLAC is well and constantly supported by many music player producer. We compared FLAC and MP3 formats using the “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major - Allegro” by Bach and the results were very interesting. For common listeners (as us) the audio quality was, more or less, the same but when we asked to a couple of friends (authentic music “hooligans”) to describe the difference between the two music files (FLAC and MP3) they spent more than 15 minutes of their (and our) time talking about “tones”, “pizzicato” and something else that I really do not remember at the moment! After the listening, when we compared the file extensions, we discovered that the FLAC file was five times bigger than the MP3 (25.6MB vs 5.1MB)… To conclude, we really think that FLAC represents a fantastic (and the best) lossless format for home stereo systems. On the other side, if you are not a music purist, MP3 could be the best choice for listening music on portable audio devices.

What is FLAC? FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favorite player (or your car or home stereo, see supported devices) just like you would an MP3 file. FLAC stands out as the fastest and most widely supported lossless audio codec, and the only one that at once is non-proprietary, is unencumbered by patents, has an open-source reference implementation, has a well documented format and API, and has several other independent implementations.
