Everyday we improve the OS we usually use adapting it to our specific needs. Consequently, we are worried about major OS upgrades between one version to another because we know that bugs could affect our installation and indirectly corrupt our saved data. Usually backup software are the right solution for data but, if something goes wrong, we have to reinstall all our OS and reconfigure it. Better, we have to spend many hours to download and configure all the single software we had installed into our original OS.

...The vertical monitor space has not enough room to visually show all the icons related to programs I use everyday. Surely this is my personal matter but I actually prefer the “old” graphic interface. For this reason I decided to install Gnome 3 but my vetust IBM Thinkpad crashed a couple of time in a week. To my surprise also the Gnome Classic option encountered some crashes due to the amount and diversity of the software I installed on my laptop during the last years. As usual, after some web searches I found a solution: MATE. This particular desktop environment is a fork of Gnome 2 and it really looks very intuitive and easy to use...

The last generation of external 3.0 usb disks allows us to create fast multi-boot drive that can be used for different purpose. Commonly we use these “special” drives as recovery tools when something goes wrong in our computers or when we would dig, in a deeper way, a particular desktop. After a kernel update, you find the start-up menu populated with extra lines related to all the old kernel versions plus the current one. To manage the start-up manager and safely remove old kernels you have to manually operate on it. First of all you have to double check what is the current kernel version. Recentemente ho scoperto una versione particolare di Ubuntu, la Linux4One, pensata e sviluppata per sfruttare al massimo le potenzialita' hardware di Acer Aspire One. Linux4One e' facile da installare, sfrutta l'interfaccia Ubuntu Netbook Remix e si distingue per il lavoro svolto sul Kernel per adattare Ubuntu all'Aspire One. Se si considera che i sistemi Linux alternativi a Linpus adatti a Aspire One non sono poi molti (dire quasi nessuno sarebbe forse piu' corretto) e' apprezzabile sapere che e' in cantiere una versione USB per caricare l'OS direttamente da chiavetta. Un progetto da monitorare con attenzione anche in futuro!

DeLi Linux is an interesting distribution which allows you to use your old PCs and save money. The first time we tested DeLi we sincerely did not believe to obtain so interesting results. In fact we were able to install DeLi on very old PCs and laptops (486) with at least 64MB of RAM. About the RAM, we found some screenshots on the DeLi website where it runs on laptops with just 16MB of RAM. Moreover, DeLi is very light, 251.1MB for the ISO and 750MB of hard disk when installed. This particular version of DeLi Linux, the 0.8, is very flexible and complete if we think that it contains all the main programs that a medium user can ask. When we try to install it on the PCs, we have not found particular matters: the installation was easy and enough fast. When used, DeLi is fast and stable; in few words we could affirm that DeLi represents a strong reality for all that people which are looking for a PC or laptop and do want to spend just few bucks… Recommended!!

Damn Small Linux 4.2.5 is one of our favourite distribution due to its capability to run on very old PC as 386/486/Pentium with very few hardware resources. This version has updated some features as Monkey Webserver 0.9.2 and is incredibly stable (as the previous ones, I must say). According to distrowatch.com, in the last 12 months Damn Small Linux has been the 10th most downloaded (and consequently used) Linux version also because, with no costs, many people are converting old Windows based machines to new up-to-date computers. Anyway, Damn Small Linux is based on Knoppix but is smaller and contains many improvements.
