The main author is Lauris Kaplinski, and several other people have contributed to the project. The project is no longer under active development, but development continues on Inkscape, a 2003 fork of Sodipodi. Sodipodi itself started as a fork of Gill, a vector-graphics program written by Raph Levien. The primary design goal of Sodipodi is to produce a usable editor for vector graphics, and a drawing tool for artists. Although it uses SVG as its native file format (including some extensions to hold metadata), it is not intended to be a full implementation of the SVG standard. Synfig is a powerful, industrial-strength vector-based 2D animation software package, designed from the ground-up for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer people and resources. While there are many other programs currently on the market to aid with the efficient production of 2D animation, we are currently unaware of any other software that can do what our software can. Background 2D Animation has traditionally been very expensive because every frame must be drawn by hand. Inkscape is a free and open source vector graphics editor application. Its stated goal is to become a powerful graphic tool while being fully compliant with the XML, SVG and CSS standards. Inkscape is primarily developed for Linux, but it is cross-platform and runs on Mac OS X (under X11), other Unix-like operating systems, and Microsoft Windows. Inkscape's implementation of SVG and CSS standards is incomplete. Most notably, it does not yet support animation, or SVG fonts. Inkscape has multi-lingual support, particularly for complex scripts, something currently lacking in most commercial vector graphics applications.

Come proteggere un documento PDF con password utilizzando un software Open Source

Il formato PDF è ormai divenuto lo standard di fatto per quanto riguarda i documenti digitali, ma come possiamo fare se il documento PDF che dobbiamo inviare contiene delle informazioni riservate che dovrebbero essere lette solo dal reale destinatario? Alcuni non sanno che ai documenti PDF è possibile applicare alcune restrizioni, tra le quali è anche possibile impostare una password necessaria per leggere il documento. Solitamente queste restrizioni si applicano utilizzando costosi software distribuiti da Adobe (Acrobat 9 pro), oggi invece vedremo come riuscire ad applicare una password ad un documento PDF utilizzando un programma gratuito ed Open Source.

È stata appena rilasciata la prima beta dell’estensione PDF import di OpenOffice.org. Grazie a questa interessante estensione, si potranno importare e modificare i file PDF con gli strumenti della suite (Draw ed Impress). La funzione di editing è veramente basica, e ci permette di modificare solo le parti di testo ma non la struttura del PDF. Bisogna comunque tener presente che si tratta di una versione preliminare.

Segnalo, con tre giorni di ritardo, la nuova uscita di questo piccolo software per la gestione dei pdf, permette di unire più pdf in un unico file o di estrarre pagine da un pdf (con molti criteri: per numero, solo le pari, solo le dispari, una ogni x, etc.), è un software opensource ospitato su sf.net, è scritto in java e indipendente dal sistema operativo.

Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 con supporto OpenOffice (ODF) e PDF

Finalmente una bella notizia. Microsoft ha confermato alla redazione di BetaNews che Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 2 includerà il supporto per il formato ODF di OpenOffice e per il PDF di Adobe. Grazie a questa funzionalità sarà possibile non solo aprire documenti in formato ODF o PDF, ma sarà anche possibile salvarli in tali formati e scegliere una delle due estensioni come formato predefinito per il salvataggio dei propri documenti. Nei piani di Microsoft c’è anche il rilascio di una serie di API che permetteranno ai programmatori di scrivere add-in per Microsoft Office in modo da aggiungere il supporto per ulteriori formati. Questo è sicuramente un bel passo avanti sia per quanto riguarda l’interoperatibilità di sistemi diversi (Windows, Linux, OsX) sia per quanto riguarda la diffusione del formato ODF di OpenOffice....
