Which path should you follow? Should you take advantage of Ubuntu's package manager and use it to upgrade your system to the latest 8.04 Hardy Heron release, or should you download a CD or DVD ISO image and do a clean install? Common wisdom says that doing a clean install is the better, safer course of action.There may be a little extra work involved configuring everything once the latest and greatest is installed, but that's nothing compared to the pain of an update gone wrong, according to traditional thinking. But that cautious approach may no longer be necessary.

Nella maggior parte dei casi il programma verrà installato nella directory /usr/local e verrà creato l'eseguibile nella directory /usr/local/bin. Per eseguire l'applicazione basta scrivere il nome dell'eseguibile nella console e premere Invio. Spesso il comando configure restituisce messaggi di errore, il che significa che mancano software o librerie ausiliari (le cosiddette dipendenze). Se questo accade leggete attentamente le ultime righe dell'output e installate prima i pacchetti mancanti indicati e ripetete la procedura fino a quando il processo di configurazione non termina senza presentare errori.

The completely new theme for Ubuntu 8.04 has been deferred to the following release. The original plan was to have a fresh theme for every long-term-support release, starting with Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron.Now it has been decided to put off the redesign until Ubuntu 8.10. Per chi è abituato ad usare Windows, passare a Linux non è cosa del tutto indolore. Bisogna scordarsi certe abitudini, soprattutto il concetto di installazione dei programmi e all'inizio si fa un po' di fatica. Meglio per chi comincia da zero. Esiste una larga documentazione su Ubuntu nel web tra siti e forum.Linux offre un'interfaccia grafica semplice e potente ma molte operazioni si fanno ancora a riga di comando (utilizzandola se ne imparano le potenzialità e poi è difficile farne a meno!!).Una sensazione molto piacevole che sia prova a passare da Windows a Linux è il senso di sicurezza e protezione che si prova. Con questo sistema operativo si sta alla larga da virus, spyware, trojan e altre parolacce che prima ci preoccupavano.
